Many concerned citizens write to their MPs to persuade them to support various causes. The following email was received in mid-February from a British Liberal Democrat MP in response to a petition regarding US President Trump’s widely denounced proposal for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza, to turn it into a “Riviera of the Middle East”.

“Thank you for writing to me on this very important issue.

Trump’s proposal for Gaza is bizarre but also dangerous. We desperately need this fragile truce to hold – but the President’s approach is more like a bull in a china shop.

He’s showing casual disregard for the rights and aspirations of Palestinians, who have suffered for so long. The UK must make clear that Trump’s proposals are wrong, flying in the face of international law.

Now is the moment for the UK to immediately recognise Palestine as a state – making clear our commitment to a two-state solution based on 1967 borders.

I have signed on to Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs spokesperson Calum Miller MP’s Early Day Motion 763 which calls on the government to hold Trump to account.”
